Havertown Superfund Site
Since I moved to Havertown in 1988, I have been concerned about the Superfund site that is centered on Eagle Road, but extends into various areas of the Township, including Paddock Park and other neighborhoods. As Commissioner, I can assure you that I intend to ask probing questions, when possible, and to do whatever is necessary to assure that the site does not present health risks to our residents and is safely and appropriately remediated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The EPA held a public meeting on April 20, 2009, and I was present and requested answers to questions and concerns residents have expressed to me. The EPA claims that it has reduced the amount of toxins at the site, and will be performing more intensive remediation because it received $5 million in funding for the site under the Stimulus Bill. The EPA also claimed that the site does not present health hazards, including to persons living in the area and those who use or play in Naylors Run.
EPA Reviews Cleanup at PCP Superfund Site
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is conducting a Five-Year Review of the Havertown PCP Superfund Site located in Haverford Township, PA. The previous Five-Year Review, looking at Phases I and II of the cleanup, was completed in August 2005. This next review will assess if all three phases of the cleanup are protective of human health and the environment. The first two phases included a geosynthetic cap and a groundwater treatment system. The third phase, which is scheduled to be completed during the spring of 2010, consists of additional groundwater cleanup, soil excavation/ backfilling and additional monitoring. This fourth Five-Year Review document will be available in August 2010

The results of the Five-Year Review are expected to be available in August 2010. There are two ways to review the site files for the Havertown PCP Superfund Site.
